A great resource for general child safety is the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Southern Africa (CAPFSA).  See their website www.childsafe.org.za

"Accidents happen anytime, in any place and affect everyone. It's up to you to prepare yourself for these unforeseen events. Knowing what to do at the right time may reduce a persons injuries and even save a life!"

Check out the Dynacare website.  They are now offering  an introductory first aid course called “In Safe Hands” which is directed at new or expecting parents.  This course includes basic first aid, safety and resuscitation.  They have thoughtfully provided a home safety checklist for us. Vehicle Safety in South Africa:

Just my personal viewpoint having seen so many children standing in front of the passenger seat with hands on the dashboard.....  Nuts!  I know they perform sometimes but PLEASE BUCKLE UP!

For Pregnant women, you can now protect your unborn child with the Preggy Protector. The Preggy Protector® works together with all motor vehicle seat belts by preventing the lap belt from riding up onto a woman's pregnant stomach. This will ensure the safety of the unborn child should sudden braking or a low speed collision occur. The Preggy Protector® is simple to install in any motor vehicle and is easily moved between seats.

Pregnancy and Safe Driving:

(from Arrive Alive website)

In modern society the mother-to-be simply can’t stay at home and wait around for nine months. It is important for our pregnant road users to know that unless they suffer from a special condition, they can live normal lives without too many changes. As long as it is comfortable they can get in a car right up until the end of pregnancy.

It would however be wise for pregnant women to avoid driving in conditions that might increase stress, such as driving in bad weather conditions, rain, wind or icy weather. Driving at night can also be stressful as your sight can be diminished and in many cases your body is growing tired.

We would like to address some of the concerns of pregnant road users and suggest.....

Safety in the Home:

In the kitchen:

Possibly the most dangerous place in the home with hot things, sharp things heavy things, poisonous stuff and more.  Yet... also possibly the most fun a toddler can have in the house!  With pots to bang, tupperware to unpack and leave on the floor for you to pack back, what better place to amuse yourself when you are little.  Some great products seen at our expos include some nifty magnetic cupboard locks supplied by BabySafe and Kiddylock storage boxes to keep those dangerous liquids away from prying hands and eyes.

Still cooking can be one of the most fun activities for a little one to do along with mom or dad.  Don't be too afraid of wasting a little food.  It is still cheaper than time at the mall.

At the Pool

A baby can crawl the distance to your pool from the patio in a few seconds.  Probably less than the time it would take you to get up and fetch a ringing cell phone.  No-one needs explaining why a pool should never be accessible to babies and toddlers but are they all safe?  Even if your own toddler has learned to swim and you feel confident about their ability in the water, some of your visiting friends may have younger ones!  Even though fences and nets can be a hassle and perhaps not in keeping with the landscaping of your garden.  It is the law and it is necessary.  Child safety around swimming pools require “Barriers of protection”. The National Spa and Pool Institute (www.nspi.co.za) speak about child safety and pools. Have a look at some of the alarms an pool safety nets and fences at the Baba Indaba expos.  Protect-a-Child, also a regular at Baba Indabas, have some neat fencing.  Check them out at www.protectachild.co.za.

Dangerous things to allow your children to do!

Sounds very odd, but have a look at the video lecture by Gever Tulley on the TED website.  Mr Tulley presents a convincing case that children should be allowed to do some dangerous things.  Perhaps we are over protective at times.
